If you are sick of hearing about how brilliant Malcom Gladwell is consider these titles.
Malcolm Gladwell, blah blah blah, yak yak yak. Everything he has written I already knew or could have easily figured out myself. Who needs to read “Outliers” to know that people have a greater chance of success in life if they are born during a baby bust and therefore have less competition? Evidently bucketsful of people do.
But, if you want to read someone who offers heavy lifting in the areas of randomness and knowledge, consider the works of Nassim Nicholas Taleb. It’s eerie, if you look at the covers of these two books and compare them to Gladwell's they look the same on the outside and explore similar topics. And amazingly, Taleb is just as accessible as Gladwell. What I love about Taleb is that he is theoretical but still demands hard data. These are titles for readers who embrace the empirical and want to understand the role of chance.
Not surprisingly, Gladwell and Taleb turn up a lot together, just google them. Here is a nice article on both writers and on the pleasure of expecting the unexpected. |

Here are two titles that celebrate what one author calls “Mean and Lowly Things.” These are very similar and very different books. Click on the links, read the product information and reviews and you will see. One is ultimately sad, but they both celebrate scholarship, knowledge and how you can be very successful by doing what you love.
